Blended learning in practice

Blended learning became popular in the early 1990s and combines physical and online training. It’s a great option for organisations with multiple, geographically dispersed locations, who need to provide employees with joint training and education without the disadvantages of distance and time.

Nowadays, it’s also ideal for the hybrid working environment, which most companies are embracing after the pandemic. Here are our top tips to get your blended learning under way.

Tip 1: Flip the classroom

Tip 1: Flip the classroom A flipped classroom is structured around the idea that a lecture or direct instruction is not the best use of class time. Instead learners encounter information or complete readings before their course, freeing class time for activities that involve higher order thinking, such as live problem-solving. In the blended professional learning environment, this means that course material can be delivered online via e-learning modules, and then debated and workshopped together.

Tip 2: Use interactive webinars

Webinars are a great addition to physical training, especially if your employees do not work at the same location. Making sure that they are interactive will help to keep your learners focused – use practical examples that your learners have researched beforehand and can then discuss the results together.

Tip 3: Provide development time

Physical training logically demands the time of your employees because they have to be physically present. Approval is given and time is set aside for the training. In the same way, it’s important to set time aside for your online training as well – trying to get employees to follow an online training course quickly during their coffee or lunch break will not benefit anyone in the short or long term.

Tip 4: Link it to a learning path

To make blended learning a success, it’s important that both physical and online training are part of a larger whole. Create a programme or learning path for your employees and combine the different learning forms in it so that they complement each other. Use the learning programmes on the SkillsTown platform for example, such as linking a course on customer-friendliness to a practical lesson in which employees have to apply their learned knowledge. Or personalise the learning path on the basis of function and experience.

SkillsTown is the number one online trainer in the Netherlands, and is the ideal platform to combine with your onsite, physical training sessions. Contact us today for a demo and experience the possibilities for yourself.
