Ten top tips to help you present better

Presenting, especially to a crowd, is probably one of the most feared aspects of the work environment. But whether it’s a job interview, a convincing pitch for your manager or giving a company presentation to the board, it’s an inescapable skill we all have to master. Here are our tips to help take your presentation skills to the next level.

Tip 1: Provide one core message

Did you know that only 10% of everything you say is remembered by your listener? So, start and end with the core message of your presentation, and keep in mind the structure of announcing, telling and repeating.

Tip 2: Practice makes perfect

Prepare your presentation well, know what you want to say and practice your presentation a few times in advance. This will give you that extra confidence boost when you need it the most.

Tip 3: Go for power posing

33% of communication consists of body language such as posture and gestures. Take advantage of that! A strong posture builds confidence, and standing upright helps you control your breathing and keeps you calm. Before your presentation, literally make yourself as big as possible for two minutes – it sounds ridiculous, but it’s proven to help the nerves!

Tip 4: Use metaphors to make your point

Research shows that your story is better remembered when you include metaphors. Also try to make your presentation as personal as possible, as it helps to keep listeners more engaged.

Tip 5: Choose images for support

90% of all the information we absorb comes through our eyes, and it only takes a quarter of a second to determine the meaning of a symbol. So use a couple of powerful images to support your story. Avoid using too many, as this can lead to confusion for the listener.

Tip 6: Get into the game

Audiences tend to do almost anything you ask them to do, as long as it’s fun and accessible enough. So, add a game element to your presentation if it’s applicable, or tell your audience in advance that they can win a prize if they remember certain things from your presentation.

Tip 7: Know your space

Make sure you can be heard and your slides can be seen clearly. To really test this, sit in the back seat before your presentation and test the sound and image of your presentation. In addition, make sure there is enough space for the audience and know where to walk so as not to disappear from view.

Tip 8: Take a break

Breaks are key during presentations, both for yourself and for your audience. By taking a sip of water every now and then or taking a deep breath in and out, you keep your story calm and prevent yourself from talking too quickly. And if your presentation is lasting longer than an hour, make sure you give your audience a toilet or refreshment break!

Tip 9: Speak with passion

Research shows that enthusiasm radiates energy and has an attractive effect. Speak with passion, think about what really excites you and try to incorporate this into your story. It’s a great way to connect with your audience!

Tip 10: Use the 10 – 20 – 30 rule

This would depend on your situation and what you’re trying to achieve in your presentation, but in general stick to the 10 – 20 – 30 rule: a maximum of 10 slides, don’t talk for more than 20 minutes at a time, and use a font of at least 30pt.
