Top tips when making a podcast

There are many reasons why recording podcasts is a good idea. One of these is the accessibility – podcasts are easy to listen to during daily tasks. A second reason is that your message gets full focus and attention, since you are literally ‘in the ear’ of the listener. Here are our five top tips to get the most out of your podcast.

Tip 1: A different way of communicating

A podcast is 100% audio, so you have no visual support to substantiate your story. Instead, use lots of examples to help your listener, talk in pictures and describe what you are thinking about and what you see in front of you. Always communicate in singular during your podcast. People generally listen to podcasts on their own so it’s much more personal to address them as ‘you’ or ‘your’. This may take some practice, but it’s very important!

Tip 2: Go for quality

Ensure you have the right tools to record quality podcasts. As mentioned before, audio is the only form of communication, so make sure you have good sound. If your sound sounds tinny, you’re already losing at least half of your listeners from the first sentence.

Tip 3: Let the conversation flow naturally

Remember that a podcast is a conversation, not a monologue. While it’s smart to jot down some pointers and have a basic script in mind, make sure that it does not sound too rehearsed or ‘stiff’. Try to live in the moment and ask questions about the topics that are being discussed to add more depth.

Tip 4: Publish frequently

Most people who start a podcast make the first episode, enthusiastically publish a second and possibly even a third episode – that same week! After that, not much happens. Just like with YouTube videos, to be effective continuity is important. Make sure you have a schedule you can stick to and publish your podcasts at a logical time. In this way you retain attention well and start to build a relationship with your listeners.

Tip 5: Make your podcast easy to find

So where do you publish your podcasts? It’s smart to make sure you share them on a platform that your target audience can easily access. This can be done via Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts for example. But you can also choose to share your podcasts via an online academy like SkillsTown, where you can design your own personalised learning platform and make your podcasts easily available to your target audience. At the same time, you can also share a lot of other relevant learning content such as webinars and e-learnings.
