What is your bucket list for happiness at work?

We are busy with our work for a very large part of our lives, so it’s imperative that it makes us happy. In fact, we believe that being content has everything to do with having a happy work life, and while some factors may be influenced by your employer, the choice ultimately lies with you. Here are our top tips to help create a happy work life for yourself.

Top tip 1: Play to your strengths

Everyone has their own special talents, but are you using yours at work? By not doing what you are good at, you’ll continuously disappoint yourself. Plus, things are a lot more enjoyable when you’re doing something that you love or that comes naturally to you. Using your talents every day will make you feel a lot better at work, plus the whole company benefits too!

Top tip 2: Manage your time

Ideally, you want to aim for that ‘nicely busy’ feeling at the end of your working day. To achieve a balance between boredom and being too busy, check whether the goals you set for yourself are attainable. Set achievable goals every day, so you can successfully look back on your workday and feel as if you’ve accomplished what you set out to do. Also reward yourself when you have successfully completed a task. Take a break to reflect on this success with a cup of coffee or take a walk outside.

If you find it difficult to get the most out of your working day, take a course to learn how to organise your time effectively. SkillsTown’s e-learning time management course will teach you how to set priorities so that you make the most of your day.

Top tip 3: Connect with colleagues

Making friends with your work colleagues is one of the best ways to create more happiness. Having someone to laugh or joke with, or share a coffee with, will lift your mood immensely. But how do you get to know your colleagues, especially if you’re working remotely? Schedule a virtual one-on-one coffee break with a different colleague every week so that you can get to know as many people as possible. You’ll quickly find ‘your people’ and before you know it, you’ll be enjoying going to work!

Top tip 4: Stay healthy

Staying healthy not only ensures a happy life, but also a happy work life. You’ll instantly feel better about yourself and are more protected against stress, work pressure and burnout. If things are busy at work, set some time aside in the evenings to plan or pack a healthy breakfast or lunch, and think about how you can get some more exercise during your working hours by scheduling a gym class or planning a walk over lunch. It takes a bit of effort, but your body, mind and soul will thank you for it later!

Top tip 5: Find meaning

As humans, finding a purpose or sense of meaning to what we’re doing is imperative. Are you contributing to a goal that you find important? Does your employer’s mission match yours? Are their goals in line with yours? This will help to create a lot more satisfaction at work, as well as a sense of usefulness and appreciation for yourself.
